Interview: Mother Tongue (1/1) News

Bumbanet: For all the people who dont know you, when was the band founded, who were the original members, who came up with the name (and what was the reason for it) and whos in the band lineup nowadays?

Mother Tongue: The band formed in austin, texas in 1990-91.the original line up was davo, christian and jesse tobias on guitar, and geoff habba on drums.no one really remember's who came up with the band name, but it's meant to be , music being the mother tongue before words.music is the mother tongue.

Bumbanet: You guys seem to enjoy playing overseas, particularly in germany, and you guys seem to have a huge fellowship over here. what do you think is the reason for europe / germany embracing mother tongue so affectionately? and whats the difference between playing overseas and in the us?

Mother Tongue: We've somehow seemed to connect to an audience in germany and a few other european countries. i think it's because audiences in europe are much more tuned in and passionate about music. also, germany is a hard core rock loving country. whereas here in the U.S., r&b, hip hop and pop music are the popular music and people are much more jaded, fickle and following of trends in music .i'm always amazed at how audiendes participate and react at shows in germany. german audiences, men and women get down and dance and let go at shows, they really feel it.people in the u.s. are much too self aware to let go like that. of course i'm generalizing. but there's no question the difference between playing in the US and europe. it would be great if it were the same for us here in the US, but it's just not. we love playing and touring in europe.

Bumbanet: You guys just released a faboulous new ep, now or never. whats your next plans, will you guys drop an album this year?

Mother Tongue: The Now Or Never ep is a prelude to our upcoming record. the songs on the ep are from the first recording sessions for the new record. the new record will be a double cd record, alot of music. we do not have a release date yet, but it will be completed sometime next year.

Bumbanet: Any particular happenings / situations this year in germany, how did you like the tour?

Mother Tongue: Both our juli and august summer tours in europe were great. they were very different from other tours in that we were doing everything ourselves without a tourmanager, without roadies and guitar tech's, and in juli we had no merch person. we also had davo's entire family out with us in august, 4 boys and davo's wife. these summer tours were retty quietly promoted, and we were touring without the push of publicity and the release of a new record. but the shows were packed, and there were a few sold out nights. it was a great summer and we were all amazed at how it went cause we really had no idea how it would go by us doing it all ourselves and having very little promotion. the only drag was when christian broke his foot, tearing his achillis tenden and heel when he jumped off stage in munich during ' burn baby'. but he was a soldier and continued on playing the rest of the hour and a half of the show and playing the rest of the tour hobbling around on crutches.

Bumbanet: name 5 favourite bands (dont matter which style ofmusic) which you guys are listening to permanently...

Mother Tongue: As i write this i'll tell you what i have in my 5 disc cd player: stevie wonder 'inner visions', tv on the radio, led zeppelin -3,i ggy and the stooges-funhouse, pj harvey.

Bumbanet: what equipment do you use?

Mother Tongue: I try and use equipment that 'works', but that always seems like a big challenge for me. i swear , i think someone put a curse on my gear. some freak somewhere has a little toy marshall stack with voodoo needles in it. i use a 70's marshall plexi head, a magnatone 30 watt combo, a jerry jones custom danelectro double cutaway guitar, an 80's fender strat, a 1970 les paul custom, an echoplex and various ever changing combo of effects that i have a great talent at breaking.

Bumbanet: how would you describe your music to a person who doesnt know the tiniest bit about you?

Mother Tongue: 'colorful, dynamic chocolate smelling rock with a hint of soulful tequila'.

Bumbanet: Which kind of person do you want to reach out to with the music, the words and the feelings of mother tongue ?

Mother Tongue: Human beings

Bumbanet: Who is this dude daddy tongue from your guestbook?

Mother Tongue: As far as i know, daddy tongue is a lifer inmate at san quentin prison, and a lifer enlistie in the mt army.

Bumbanet: If you would not be part of mother tongue, what would you do right now?

Mother Tongue: I'd be a sorcerer practicing magick in the jungles of mexico, painting, surfing and tending to my 20 beutiful wives.

Bumbanet: what about the mysterious magic hat fixed on davos head all the time, does it really provide magic? and how?

Mother Tongue: thats a touchy subject shine. we're not supposed to talk about it. lets just say that hat was a gift from a very powerful and intimidating figure.
